Jay Thomas (ex DJ @ Big WAYS radio in Charlotte) told this story on Letterman’s show. It is about Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger on television, who was known for taking his role seriously and never breaking character in public – setting was in  Charlotte in the early ’70’s .
