Potential Golden Gate Bridge Shut Down

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT UPDATE REGARDING PLANNED PICKETING AND POTENTIAL OCCUPY OAKLAND ACTIVITIES ON MAY 1, 2012 AT GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Many of the unions that represent employees at the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (GGBHTD) come together and collectively negotiate. This group, known as the Union Coalition, represents 375 employees in 25 different bargaining units. The Union Coalition has announced that they will engage in a May Day Rally on May 1st from 7 am to 10 am (see the Rally flyer).
The Union Coalition has been engaged in non-disruptive, informational picketing over the last several months. It has come to the GGBHTD’s attention that the Union Coalition may be partnering with Occupy Oakland with respect to their May 1st event. If any of the unions on the Golden Gate Bridge declare a strike or shutdown action on May Day, we will act in solidarity with these striking workers and the international call for a general strike on May Day, by blockading the flow of capital to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District. This will be accomplished by a collaboration of pickets and direct action which will shut down all modes of transportation from Marin to San Francisco.
Per their resolution, Occupy Oakland is deferring to the Union Coalition with respect to whether or not they will attempt to “shut down all modes of transportation from Marin to San Francisco.” At this juncture, it is unclear whether or not the Union Coalition will in fact declare a strike or shutdown action.
The co-leaders of the Union Coalition are Marina Secchitano with the Inlandboatman’s Union (IBU) and Alex Tonison with the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), Local 21.
The GGBHTD is closely monitoring this situation and is aware of various discussions on the Internet that mention shutting down the Bridge roadway on May 1st. The GGBHTD will work with our partner agencies to insure public safety and public convenience, but there may be some inconvenience to our customers on May 1st.
The GGBHTD is engaged in good faith bargaining with the Union Coalition, and our next negotiating session is scheduled for May 7th.
