Obama Embraces “Death Panel” Concept in New Medicare Rule

Monday, December 26, 2010,  The New York Times –

During the stormy debate over his healthcare plan, President Barack Obama promised his program would not “pull the plug on grandma,” and Congress dropped plans for death panels and “end of life” counseling that would encourage aged patients from partaking in costly medical procedures.

Opponents of Obama’s plan, including former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, dubbed such efforts as “death panels” that would encourage euthanasia.

But on Dec. 3, the Obama administration seemingly flouted the will of Congress by issuing a new Medicare regulation that goes into effect on January 1, 2011, detailing “voluntary advance care planning” that is to be included during patients’ annual checkups. The regulation aimed at the aged “may include advance directives to forgo aggressive life-sustaining treatment,”

The New York Times reports:

Earl Blumenauer, D, Oregon, has been urging Obama to cover “end of life planning” as a medicare benefit.  After learning of the administration’s decision, Mr. Blumenauer’s office celebrated “a quiet victory,” but urged supporters not to crow about it.

“While we are very happy with the result, we won’t be shouting it from the rooftops because we aren’t out of the woods yet,” Mr. Blumenauer’s office said in an e-mail in early November to people working with him on the issue. “This regulation could be modified or reversed, especially if Republican leaders try to use this small provision to perpetuate the ‘death panel’ myth.”

Moreover, the e-mail said: “We would ask that you not broadcast this accomplishment out to any of your lists, even if they are ‘supporters’ — e-mails can too easily be forwarded.”

The e-mail continued: “Thus far, it seems that no press or blogs have discovered it, but we will be keeping a close watch and may be calling on you if we need a rapid, targeted response. The longer this goes unnoticed, the better our chances of keeping it.”

In the interview, Mr. Blumenauer said, “Lies can go viral if people use them for political purposes.”

In July 2010, Obama bypassed Congress approval and  appointed Dr. Donald Berwick,  a long time advocate for rationing health care for the elderly, to the Administrator of Medicare and Medicade Services”.

  1. BJ.. I am sick? If I am sick will the death panels declare I am to die as soon as possible? Is not a death panel a means to limit the expense of carbon by an individual. consider carbon as life and a currency. How long a n individual lives the greater expense in dollars or carbon is generated. I have no political affiliations. I only believe in truth. CARBONREVOLT.

    • The purpose of the death panels is to save the government money, not limit carbon. If you vote to keep those that oppose the Obama health Care Plan, we will not have to worry about dealth panels. The government spends the most money for health care on those aged 65 and over, so they are tying eliminate what they call a waste of $ because thos people will die soon any way.

As far as caron is concerned. CARBON IS A GOOD THING, NOT A BAD THING. Global warming is a progressive, liberal, statist hoax to tax you more with out you directly knowing it. See: Please study all the posts under this category of “Energy” and under the category “environment”. for THE TRUTH

Carbon is a good thing. When we inhale we breath oxygen. When we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide. Plants breath carbon dioxide AND EXHALE OXYGEN. WE NEED OXYGEN TO LIVE. PLANTS NEED CARBON DIOXIDE TO LIVE. We need plants to live TO PROVIDE US oxygen. ie: THUS, WITHOUT CARBON DIOXIDE WE ARE DEAD……… All this global warming , carbon dioxide destroying the planet is non sense. The air on the earth contains 4 parts carbon dioxide for every 10,000 parts of oxygen and other necessary gas which we need for life. That is carbon is only 4 / 10,000 = .04% of the air we breath. It has been that way for thousand of years and will be that way for many more thousands of years.
