Excess Social Spending Will Kill the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg

Letter to the Editor of the Marin Independent Journal, December 3, 2012

‘You just don’t get it’

In response to Jan Jones’ letter to the editor (IJ, Nov. 21, “Proud former Republican”):

Jan, you just don’t get it.

You call yourself a proud “do gooder” and think it “would be nice if we all thought helping our fellow American was the right thing to do.”

America is broke. California is broke. As Ben Franklin said: “When people find out they can vote themselves money, that will lead to the complete collapse of the Country.” As Margaret Thatcher said: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

To further put this in words that Ms. Jones and all the other progressive liberals who wish to help the disadvantaged may understand: “The problem is, when we pass the tipping point where the current 50 percent of the population who pay income taxes and work for a living, are fewer, (than the currently 50 percent) of the population that pays no income taxes and vote for a living. Social Security and Medicare are already broke. When this tipping point is passed, there will be no more money to help anyone, including the disadvantaged.

And, thus, the actions of the progressive liberals to help those disadvantaged, will eventually cause great harm to all of society.

If you need some history, look at every city or country that has gone down this path: Detroit, Greece, Ireland, Argentina, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, etc.
