America’s Cup – Wednesday in SF is Match Point –

It all comes down to one race as America’s Cup suddenly becomes must-see in.F.

Several Days Ago, it was New Zealand 8 USA 3 for the race to be the first to win 9 races.  Today USA won 2 races to even it up 8 to 8.

Oracle Team USA’s comeback effort has turned the America’s Cup into a fantastic viewing spectacle. It has  became thrilling to watch.

The winner on Wednesday wins the  Cup

Not too surprisingly, Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison, who owns the sailing team, skipped his keynote speech at Oracle OpenWorld, the company’s huge user conference, to watch Tuesday’s races. Thomas Kurian, executive vice president, stepped in to make announcements about new cloud computing products.

When real racing did resume with Oracle Team USA facing off against Emirates Team New Zealand, the first few races were snoozers. New Zealand smoked Oracle, building a 8-3 lead in the first-to-nine-wins contest. Boring.

But then, with Oracle on the brink of elimination, everything changed on Sept. 19.

Oracle came roaring back. Race by race the Oracle team found its second wind and racked up win after win.

How did this turnaround happen? The Wall Street Journal discusses it here. In essence Oracle’s surge hinged on “revisiting a discarded idea, gambling on wind conditions and, as in any comeback, getting very lucky.”

At last San Francisco can look forward to a spectacle on the water.
